Pariconha market pesticide poisoning

Overview

Investigators linked a fatal poisoning at Pariconha's free market on 26‑27 July 2026 to the insecticide Metomil after it was found in victims' blood. Seven people fell ill after drinking a locally made “raizada”; 36‑year‑old Gilberto Alves Vicente died, six others were hospitalized at Hospital Regional do Alto Sertão (HRAS) in Delmiro Gouveia. Subsequent forensic testing by the Alagoas Police Scientific Laboratory confirmed Metomil, a WHO‑classified highly hazardous agro‑toxin, in the samples, prompting a criminal probe by the Polícia Civil de Alagoas and involvement of state health authorities. By 29 July, the six surviving patients had been discharged and returned home while health officials await final laboratory reports from LACEM. Testing of the seized beverage and remaining biological material continues as authorities seek the source of the contamination.
