Parkinson's disease management and economic impact

Parkinson’s disease, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, is presenting significant clinical and economic challenges across Europe. In Germany, management strategies include traditional medication, deep brain stimulation, and specialized initiatives like ‘Ping Pong Parkinson’ to maintain patient mobility. Educational efforts, such as seminars led by neurologists, focus on early detection and lifestyle adjustments to assist patients and caregivers.

Research published in the journal Movement Disorders provides detailed data on the disease’s massive economic impact. In 2019, the annual social and healthcare cost in Europe was approximately 22.8 billion euros, a figure that rises to roughly 28.8 billion euros when adjusted to 2025 prices. The prevalence of the disease in Europe has nearly doubled since 1990, increasing from 135 to 247 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, driven by aging populations and better diagnostics. In 2019, approximately 2.2 million adults were living with the disease across 47 European countries.

The economic burden is divided into three main categories: 17.3 billion euros in direct medical and non-medical costs (such as hospital care, medication, and home adaptations), 4.4 billion euros in unpaid informal care provided by family and friends, and 1 billion euros in indirect costs due to lost productivity. Germany recorded the highest national cost at 5.7 billion euros, followed by France at 5.3 billion, Italy at 2.6 billion, Spain at 1.9 billion, and the United Kingdom at 1.6 billion. These five nations account for approximately 75% of the total economic weight of the disease in Europe. Researchers warn that rising numbers will place increasing pressure on healthcare and social care systems.
