The victim was found dead inside a kiosk along a bicycle path on the night of Sunday, September 20, 2026, with fatal wounds to her neck, chest, and leg. The suspect, who was discovered with a self-inflicted chest wound, initially claimed that the couple had been attacked by four masked individuals during a robbery. However, investigators discovered he had traveled to Igoumenitsa the day before the incident carrying the weapon used in the attack. During hospital questioning, the man admitted to the killing, stating, ‘We argued and I lost control.’ He also initially suggested the motive involved a financial dispute of 2,000 euros. Forensic details from the Ioannina Forensic Service indicate the victim sustained approximately 15 knife wounds from a 7.5 cm paring knife. The autopsy revealed two deep wounds to the neck that caused massive hemorrhaging, and seven wounds to the back that damaged vital organs, including the liver, stomach, and left lung. Defensive wounds on her hands and knee suggest she attempted to resist the attack. Social media posts from the victim in the days preceding the attack revealed deep distress and warnings regarding her situation. Following the incident, the Women's Initiative of Igoumenitsa organized a large-scale protest and march. Citizens gathered at the City Hall square to demand justice and the legal recognition of the term ‘femicide,’ criticizing the use of euphemisms like ‘crimes of passion.’ Protesters marched to the bicycle path where the victim was killed. The victim's family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Diotima Center, which supports victims of domestic violence. A funeral service for Penelope was held in Metamorfosi, Attica.
