Conservation efforts and wildlife sightings in Patagonia and surrounding Chilean regions have highlighted the importance of habitat connectivity. In Chile and Argentina, efforts to monitor endangered species like the huemul and the pajonal cat have been supported by crowdfunding and international documentation. Subsequent wildlife sightings in Recent documentation includes a documentary filmed on the Fundo Puchegüín estate, which was secured via an international crowdfunding campaign led by Puelo Patagonia to create a vital biological corridor for the endangered huemul. In Argentina, researchers also recorded a Leopardus pajeros, or pajonal cat, moving across the snow-covered steppe of Santa Cruz province. In Chile, including camera traps from the University of Chile recorded a puma and a colocolo cat in the Quebrada de La Plata Natural Monument, Monument near Maipú, confirming the area’s role as an active ecological corridor. The colocolo cat sighting is particularly notable as it had not been recorded in that area for over six years. However, new challenges to wildlife protection have confirmed emerged. In the functionality Aysén region, the Agricultural and Livestock Service (SAG) filed a formal complaint regarding the suspected capture of established ecological corridors. These sightings, facilitated by a puma near Puerto Cisnes. Despite SAG monitoring the area with camera traps, underscore traps to facilitate potential relocation, the role animal was not recorded during follow-up periods. SAG regional director Óscar Videla expressed regret over the potential hunting of apex predators in maintaining ecological balance despite threats such as habitat fragmentation and climate change. the animal, noting that the species is protected under Chilean law 19.473.
