Paul Schrader use of AI actors in film production
Overview
Director and screenwriter Paul Schrader has announced plans to use generative artificial intelligence to create synthetic human actors for his upcoming film, ‘Three Guns at Dawn’. The film noir, set in South Central Los Angeles, features characters including a corrupt police officer, a drug dealer, and a serial killer.
Schrader stated that the decision to use AI-generated ‘human prototypes’ arose after Black actors declined the lead roles. In an interview with The Playlist, Schrader noted that performers were hesitant to participate because the script contains ‘no good Black people’.
Rather than revising the screenplay or seeking alternative casting, Schrader intends to use AI to replace traditional actors entirely. This move has prompted discussions regarding the use of technology to fill roles that performers of color have rejected due to concerns over the perpetuation of racial stereotypes.
