Pediatric cardiac procedures in Turkish hospitals
Overview
Medical facilities in Turkey have successfully performed specialized cardiac interventions on pediatric patients.
At Ankara Bilkent City Hospital, surgeons performed a rare procedure on a six-month-old infant diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension and right-sided heart failure. The treatment involved placing a bridge vessel between the left pulmonary artery and the aorta, a procedure described by Pediatric Cardiology Specialist Prof. Dr. İbrahim Ece as only the third time such a treatment has been applied to a patient in that age group worldwide.
In Gaziantep, medical teams at Gaziantep City Hospital treated two siblings, aged 12 and 6, for Atrial Septal Defect (ASD). Using an angioplasty method with catheters, doctors closed 13-millimeter holes in both children’s hearts, avoiding open-heart surgery.
