Pelister National Park conservation and security efforts

Overview

Pelister National Park in Macedonia has implemented new measures to enhance conservation and security within its territory. Initially, the park installed wildlife monitoring cameras at altitudes of approximately 2,000 metres to track species such as wild goats and to monitor visitor behavior and littering.

Following these efforts, park rangers and the Bitola Police conducted a nighttime operation on August 12, 2026, to apprehend armed individuals suspected of illegal hunting. The suspects were located near the ‘Golema Griva’ site after patrols trekked through difficult terrain. Park officials noted that the rugged landscape and deteriorating forest roads make regular patrolling difficult, stating that repairing these roads is a high priority for improving nature protection and fire safety.
