Pellet heating fuel shortages in Chile

The Chilean Ministry of Energy has intensified its monitoring of the pellet fuel market following reports of supply difficulties in the Los Ríos region. While officials maintain there is no national stockout, they acknowledge a scenario of tightness caused by high winter demand and logistical challenges. To track distribution, the Ministry implemented biweekly reports for August and September.

Industry representatives from the Chilean Biomass Association (AChBIOM) have clarified that stock remains available and production is proceeding as planned. They noted that while production typically occurs in summer for sales between March and September, seasonal pressure, sudden cold waves, and logistics issues often lead to temporary shortages at retail points, particularly from the Biobío region southward.

In the Los Lagos Region, energy authorities have urged residents to avoid hoarding pellets to ensure market stability. Regional energy official Andrés Niklitschek monitored local distributors to reassure families that the situation is transitory. Niklitschek clarified that because the pellet market is private, the state cannot dictate production, sales, or pricing. However, the Ministry of Energy continues to coordinate with producers and distributors to monitor stock levels and keep the public informed, advising citizens to purchase only what is necessary.
