Pemex energy transition and production strategy

Overview

Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex) is pursuing a dual-track strategy involving energy transition and increased hydrocarbon production.

Under the Hydrocarbon Sector Development Plan, the company aims to diversify revenue and reduce emissions. Key initiatives include the commercial extraction of lithium from oil brines, with investments expected in 2028 and operations by 2030. Pemex also plans to develop solar farms and expand electric vehicle charging infrastructure across its national network of service stations.

Simultaneously, Pemex is addressing declining reserves by increasing drilling activity. According to the 2027 Federal Expenditure Budget Project, the company intends to complete 259 wells in 2027, a 24% increase from the 209 wells scheduled for 2026. This drilling program aims to incorporate 542.8 million barrels of crude oil equivalent in 3P reserves to mitigate the decline of mature fields.
