Data center developers in Pennsylvania are increasingly pursuing large-scale projects that integrate independent energy sources to meet the power demands of artificial intelligence.

In northern Pennsylvania, Alpha Compute has entered a $55 million agreement to acquire land and natural gas rights to develop a 200-megawatt campus utilizing Marcellus shale gas. Similarly, Talen Energy and River Pointe Logistics are seeking to develop a campus in Northampton County that could include up to 23 buildings and a 480MW on-site substation, a move that involves challenging local zoning ordinances.

In Southwestern Pennsylvania, Prime Data Centers LLC has proposed the Starpointe Business Park, a project featuring 1.8 million square feet of space across seven buildings. This proposal includes a 350-megawatt natural gas power plant designed to operate independently from the local grid via the Rover Pipeline. The project has faced significant public interest and opposition from residents concerned about air, light, and noise pollution.
