Pentagon security and information leak investigations
Overview
The Pentagon has taken steps to secure sensitive information following concerns regarding classified data accessibility and leaks. Initially, the department removed decades-old classified documents, specifically those related to the Secretary of Defense Orders Book (SDOB), from SIPRNet, a secure network used by military personnel. This move followed criticism from high-ranking generals concerning war plans involving Iran.
Subsequently, the Pentagon launched an investigation into leaks concerning the depletion of U.S. munitions stockpiles, including Patriot interceptors and long-range missiles, during the conflict with Iran. As part of this probe, approximately 50 members of the Joint Staff underwent polygraph examinations in August to determine if classified information was shared with the media or if foreign intelligence was involved. While reports indicate no officials failed questions regarding leaking to the press, President Trump has criticized the unauthorized disclosures, labeling them “treasonous statements” and “fake news.”
New details from the investigation highlight the scale of the munitions shortage. Reports from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) indicate that Patriot PAC-3 MSE interceptor stockpiles have decreased by 65 percent since late February, while THAAD interceptor stocks fell from 452 to 278 missiles. Investigators are exploring whether a foreign intelligence asset is responsible for the disclosures due to the highly restricted nature of the data. While the polygraph testing of high-ranking military officers and civilian officials is described as highly unusual, General Dan Caine, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, was reportedly excluded from the testing process.
Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell stated that the department takes all leaks of classified national security information “extremely seriously” and is conducting investigations to ensure the security of U.S. forces worldwide. Meanwhile, President Trump has simultaneously denied reports of strategic weapons shortages.
