Pergusa lake sustainability amid drought

In late July 2026 Enna municipal officials and Legambiente Sicilia agreed on a joint agenda to bring Pergusa‑basin projects into line with EU environmental standards, upgrade wastewater infrastructure, restore lake‑monitoring and introduce biological mosquito control. A subsequent Legambiente monitoring campaign confirmed that microbiological water quality at Pergusa met legal limits, but warned that the shallow lake remains highly vulnerable to climate‑change effects such as accelerated evaporation and ecological imbalance, with ongoing pressures from the nearby motor‑sport circuit and outdated sewage.

A week later the European Drought Observatory highlighted record‑low flows in major rivers across the continent, signalling a widening water crisis. Within this context, Legambiente’s “Goletta dei Laghi” report reiterated Pergusa’s compliance with bacterial standards while noting that climate‑driven warming is causing rapid evaporation and frequent drying of the lake, threatening its biodiversity. The findings link Pergusa’s local challenges to broader European drought, pollution and ageing water infrastructure, underscoring the need for continued monitoring, sewer upgrades, and coordinated regional action to safeguard the lake’s ecological health.
