Perovskite solar cell industrialization efforts

Overview

Efforts to industrialize perovskite solar cell technology have seen recent developments in both Japan and through international partnerships.

Ricoh has announced plans to establish a mass-production system for these next-generation cells, which are characterized as thin, lightweight, and flexible. Utilizing proprietary inkjet technology, Ricoh aims to achieve a production capacity of several hundred megawatts per year by 2030, with long-term goals of reaching gigawatt-scale production. This initiative was selected for the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry’s ‘GX Supply Chain Construction Support Project’.

In a separate collaborative move, TNO, Perovion Technologies, and Toyo Seikan Group Holdings have agreed to intensify joint development to transition perovskite technology from development to practical mass production. This partnership combines solar technology with expertise in advanced materials, encapsulation, and module integration, specifically focusing on scalable roll-to-roll manufacturing processes to improve performance and durability for large-scale commercial use.
