Peru illegal mining and organized crime operations
Overview
Peruvian security forces and the National Police have conducted multiple operations targeting illegal mining and organized crime across several regions. In the Pataz province of La Libertad, joint interventions led to the arrest of 20 individuals, including alleged members of the criminal organization ‘La Gran Alianza’, and the seizure of weapons and explosives.
In Madre de Dios, authorities destroyed over 30 illegal mining camps in the Tambopata area, while operations in Cañete resulted in eight detentions for alleged illegal mining.
Following these broader enforcement actions, police investigated an armed robbery at a mining plant in La Rinconada. This operation led to the arrest of eight suspects and the recovery of more than eight kilograms of gold. Investigators are examining whether the assault was orchestrated from within the Corporación Minera Ananea S. A. plant, focusing on contradictions in worker statements and the involvement of plant administration and security personnel.
