Peru water and housing crisis response

Overview

Peru is implementing legislative and logistical measures to address critical shortages in water, sanitation, and housing. The Ministry of Housing, Construction, and Sanitation (MVCS) announced plans to propose 15 laws to Congress to unblock stalled infrastructure projects. Minister Mauricio Arnillas noted that approximately 15 million Peruvians lack sewage access and 9 million lack domestic water.

In response to water scarcity and El Niño, the National Superintendency of Sanitation Services (Sunass) has authorized providers in the Puno region to use investment and reserve funds for urgent measures, such as water distribution via tanker trucks and improving treatment systems.

Regarding housing, the MVCS and Caja Huancayo signed an agreement worth S/ 24.46 million to provide temporary housing modules for earthquake victims in the Junín region. Additionally, new temporary housing modules made from Amazonian wood were presented in Ucayali, with plans to include them in public procurement catalogs to support disaster relief efforts.
