Pet adoption initiatives in Spain

Overview

The city of Albacete is set to host the second National Adoption Fair, titled ‘Adopta un pana’, on October 24 and 25 at the IFAB venue. The event features 32 animal shelters from various Spanish provinces, including Madrid, Valencia, and Murcia, with the goal of promoting responsible pet ownership and finding homes for dogs.

The initiative responds to rising concerns regarding pet abandonment in Spain, which often increases in September. Data from the Affinity Foundation indicates that approximately 170,000 dogs and cats enter shelters annually in the country. Contributing factors to abandonment include changes in daily routines, unsterilized litters, and challenges related to housing or veterinary expenses.

For the 2026 edition, the Linares-based shelter ‘The Animal’s Home’ has confirmed its participation. The fair will feature over one hundred dogs seeking new homes, with each participating shelter permitted to bring up to three available dogs. Organizers are emphasizing responsible decision-making, noting that adoption requires evaluating a pet’s character and compatibility with a family’s lifestyle to avoid impulsive choices.
