Pet-friendly tourism boom in Italy

Overview

In late June 2026 Italian resorts and mountain sites began rolling out pet‑friendly amenities such as infrared saunas, dog‑only showers and beach kits. By late July a national survey showed over 6 million Italians vacationing with pets, generating about €9.6 billion.

Since then operators have broadened the offer. In the Dolomites Skyview Chalets at Lake Dobbiaco charge €329 per night plus €20 daily for dogs and provide private saunas and forest access. On the Campanian coast the Lago di Nabi glamping site adds welcome kits for €15 a day, while Ricci Beach in Cesenatico reserves a beachfront area with umbrellas and sunbeds for €10‑25 daily. Valtellina now hosts guided “Trekking a 4 Zampe” walks and dog‑friendly mountain huts.

The July 20 survey refined the market size to 6.3 million pet‑traveling Italians (57 % dogs) and projected up to €15.8 billion if the trend matures. Main obstacles remain fragmented transport rules, limited veterinary services and booking difficulties. Italy hosts more than 130 000 pet‑friendly rentals, the highest share in Europe, but train policies remain uneven.

A Global Pet Travel Data Report 2026 placed Italy eighth worldwide for pet‑friendly destinations, with 54 % of owners planning trips and three‑quarters of hotels now accepting pets. Veterinarians advise pre‑trip health checks, up‑to‑date vaccinations and parasite protection, while travelers compile detailed checklists for transport and accommodation. Global searches for pet travel have risen over 650 %.
