PFAS and chemical contamination in Northern Europe

Reports indicate rising concerns regarding chemical contamination, specifically PFAS, in Northern European environments.

In Denmark, the National Audit Office criticized the Danish Defence for delays in investigating potential contamination at 41 sites. One location, the Korsør Fire School, was identified as a site where PFAS firefighting foam was sprayed directly onto the ground for years, posing risks to human health and livestock. Additionally, consumer organization Forbrugerrådet Tænk reported finding PFAS in all nine tests conducted on canned cod roe and fish roe.

In the Netherlands, research by Natuur & Milieu and the Netherlands Institute of Ecology found that none of the investigated lakes or swimming areas fully meet chemical quality standards. While biological water quality has seen slight improvements, chemical pollution has worsened over the last decade. Common contaminants identified include PFAS, pesticides, nitrogen, and phosphorus. Researchers noted that while immediate health issues from single exposures are unlikely, the widespread presence of these chemicals necessitates stricter monitoring and pollution control at the source.
