Phú Quốc former police chief land fraud trial

Overview

The An Giang Provincial People's Court conducted a trial for Lê Văn Mót, the former Chief of Police of Phú Quốc, and Nguyễn Thị Hằng regarding a land fraud scheme totaling over 67 billion VND. Between 2018 and 2023, the pair allegedly used Mót’s professional reputation and knowledge of land management to deceive victims into purchasing protected forests or state-managed land. Prosecutors initially proposed a life sentence for Hằng for “fraudulent appropriation of property” and money laundering, while Mót faced a recommended 14 to 16 years for fraud.

Following the trial, the court issued final sentences. Lê Văn Mót was sentenced to 18 years in prison for fraud. Nguyễn Thị Hằng received a total of 30 years in prison, consisting of 20 years for fraud and 10 years for money laundering, after it was determined she laundered over 21 billion VND through transfers to relatives and acquaintances.
