Pharmaceutical waste collection campaigns in Argentina

Overview

Various regions in Argentina have implemented campaigns to collect expired or unused medications to prevent environmental contamination and public health risks.

In the Alto Neuquén region, the Casa Segura campaign recently completed its fourth intensive phase, collecting approximately 89.54 kilograms of medication. This total included 62.4 kilograms of expired or obsolete drugs and 27.14 kilograms suitable for reuse. The initiative, which began in 2023, also involves recycling cardboard and plastic bottles.

Similarly, in Concepción del Uruguay, the Campaign for the Collection of Expired or Unused Home Medications was held for the third consecutive year. Organized by local health and municipal entities, the event collected 29.5 kilograms of medications. These drugs are transferred to specialized companies for destruction using pyrolytic ovens to ensure active ingredients do not contaminate water sources or ecosystems.
