Philanthropic hospital support for Brazil's SUS

Overview

The role and expansion of philanthropic hospitals within Brazil’s Unified Health System (SUS) has been highlighted through recent developments in healthcare infrastructure.

During a health forum in São Paulo, the Ministry of Health noted that philanthropic institutions are essential to the SUS, providing over 164,000 beds across 1,145 municipalities. These hospitals account for more than 40% of total SUS hospital production and up to 70% of high-complexity procedures, such as cardiac surgeries and transplants.

In Curitiba, the expansion of these services continued with the inauguration of the Unidade Hospitalar Monsenhor Mário Sérgio Bittencourt de Carvalho. Managed by the Irmandade Santa Casa de Curitiba, this new facility provides 60 beds dedicated to SUS patients and is designed to handle emergency cases. The unit's operation is supported by an annual federal investment of R$ 50 million.
