Philip Morris economic impact in Europe
Overview
Philip Morris International (PMI) has demonstrated significant economic engagement within the European market through supply chain agreements and large-scale industrial investments.
In Italy, a 15-year supply chain agreement between Philip Morris Italia and the agricultural sector has reportedly generated over 3 billion euros in value. Luigi Scordamaglia, CEO of Filiera Italia, noted that this model emphasizes long-term commitments, digitalization, and sustainability, while also calling for better EU protection of domestic production chains against third-country imports.
Broadening the scope to the European Union, an EY-Parthenon study indicates that PMI is projected to contribute nearly 343 billion euros to the EU economy between 2021 and 2025. This impact includes 22.3 billion euros in spending on European suppliers, 27.4 billion euros in investments in operations, and 39.5 billion euros in exports. The company's European supply chain is expected to support approximately 164,000 jobs by 2025, including 22,500 direct positions.
Significant investments are also being directed toward Research and Development, including 422 million euros in Europe and 2.2 billion euros in Switzerland. In Greece, the company has invested over 700 million euros to transform the Aspropyrgos facility into a production unit dedicated exclusively to smoke-free products, with approximately 87% of its production destined for export markets.
