Philippines 2026 tropical storm impacts

In late July 2026, Tropical Storm Kiyapo struck the northern Philippines, prompting PAGASA to raise Wind Signal No. 2 for Batanes and parts of Cagayan. The storm made landfall on Camiguin Island with sustained winds of 85 km/h, bringing heavy rain that flooded 43 barangays in Iloilo City, displacing over 120 families and activating a blue alert. Local authorities opened evacuation centers and prepared food and relief supplies.

A week later, Tropical Storm Maymay (internationally Kujira) intensified over northern Luzon. PAGASA again issued Signal No. 2 for several provinces, and the NDRRMC placed the nation on full alert. The storm triggered deadly landslides, killing two people in Benguet, and forced the suspension of classes in the capital region and 22 provinces. Rescue teams were mobilised, pre‑emptive evacuations carried out, and ₱1.8 million allocated for humanitarian aid. By early August the system had weakened to a tropical depression but continued to produce heavy rain across the region.

Both storms highlighted the Philippines' vulnerability to rapid‑intensifying tropical systems, prompting repeated emergency responses, evacuation measures, and relief efforts throughout the 2026 season.
