Philippines fisherman octopus encounter

Overview

In July, fisherman Jesser Cervantes experienced a dangerous encounter with a large octopus while fishing from a small wooden boat near Puerto Princesa in Palawan, Philippines. The creature latched onto Cervantes’ head and face, using its tentacles and suction cups to cover his mouth, which created a risk of asphyxiation.

After unsuccessful attempts to remove the animal by hand, Cervantes used a piece of bamboo to strike the octopus, eventually forcing it to release its hold. Cervantes released the animal back into the sea and reportedly escaped the encounter without serious injuries, though he noted the strength of the suction posed a risk of skin damage to his face.
