Phishing and financial fraud in Turkey

Overview

Reports indicate various phishing scams targeting individuals in Turkey. In one instance, a bank customer lost 150,000 Turkish Lira after approving a misleading text message that read, ‘If you do not want messages, cancel and confirm.’ The victim was able to recover the funds after the bank reviewed the security breach.

Separately, cybercriminals have been using fraudulent websites that mimic official Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality pages to target Istanbulkart users. These fake platforms appear at the top of search engine results, tricking citizens into believing they are paying small fees for card services. Investigations show that approximately 87 people have been defrauded over the last two years, with scammers using captured banking information to withdraw significant sums ranging from thousands of Lira to hundreds of Euros. The Istanbul Anadolu Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into these crimes.

Recent developments show that authorities are continuing to investigate these large-scale cyber fraud schemes. In a related crackdown on digital crimes, police conducted operations across six provinces, including Istanbul and Bursa, targeting investment fraud. Sixteen suspects were detained for using information systems to defraud citizens with promises of high returns, resulting in eight arrests.
