Phone‑theft incidents targeting elderly in Europe

In early July, an 81‑year‑old resident of Malmö used a spare mobile phone to distract and capture a thief attempting to steal her device, preventing the loss on her own. By the end of the month, police in Belgium reported a series of coordinated phone‑related crimes. In Mechelen, three men were arrested for a sophisticated telephone‑fraud scheme that impersonated a police officer, stole an elderly victim’s bank card, phone and jewellery, and transferred thousands of euros to a foreign account; investigators recovered cash, laptops, phones and card‑reading equipment. Authorities warned the public that genuine officers never collect money or valuables at private homes. In a separate case, two young men were convicted for “ramkraken” burglaries of mobile‑phone shops in Mechelen and Brugge, resulting in the theft of dozens of phones and about €15,000 of equipment. The Belgian cases illustrate a broader pattern of phone‑theft and fraud targeting both elderly individuals and retail outlets, following the isolated thwarting incident in Sweden.
