Physical music sales surge, K‑pop and super‑fans

Entities: Luminate · United States · K‑pop · BTS · Generation Z

Overview

In the first half of 2026 U.S. physical music formats rebounded, with CD units climbing 16 % to 16.3 million and overall physical album sales rising 7.8 % to 38.2 million units, while streaming kept dominating the market.

The surge was driven largely by K‑pop fandoms purchasing collectible box‑sets that bundle photocards, posters and other memorabilia. Roughly half of Gen Z and millennial buyers do not own a CD player and treat the discs as memorabilia rather than a listening format. Even excluding K‑pop releases, U.S. CD sales would still have risen 6.7 %, indicating a broader shift toward affordable tangible music ownership.

Export data showed South Korean K‑pop shipments reaching $257.5 million, a 125 % year‑on‑year increase, with the United States importing $74.1 million. BTS’s ARIRANG release alone moved 516 000 copies in its opening week.

In Germany, total music‑industry revenue reached €670 million, with streaming accounting for 84.4 % of sales and physical formats 13.6 %. Physical revenue grew 5.4 % year‑on‑year, propelled by vinyl up 9.8 % (now 47.8 % of the physical market) and modest CD gains.

Luminate’s 2026 Midyear Report confirmed that CD sales grew roughly seven times faster than vinyl (vinyl up only 2.4 %). CDs are priced around $12‑$18, versus $35‑$40 for new vinyl pressings, reinforcing their appeal as a lower‑cost, fandom‑focused format. The 16 % CD rise marked the strongest growth in more than a decade, though vinyl still leads in total unit volume.

A Luminate report released on July 30 2026 reaffirmed the 16 % CD sales increase to 16.3 million units, noting that even without K‑pop titles the market grew 6.7 % and emphasizing the role of Gen Z and millennial collectors who view CDs as tangible support for their favorite artists.
