Pig carcass disposal controversy in Spuž
Overview
Residents of Spuž and Danilovgrad reported that the ‘Naša farma’ pig farm, owned by the company Voli, was improperly disposing of dead animals. Drone photography and local reports indicated that carcasses were left in the open, covered only by metal sheets and white powder rather than being buried under soil or incinerated. Citizens raised concerns regarding potential groundwater contamination of the Zeta River and the risk of infectious diseases.
Following these reports, veterinary inspectors ordered the emergency closure of the disposal pit. Vladimir Đaković, director of the Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary and Phytosanitary Affairs, stated that the animal deaths were due to “regular mortality rates rather than a contagious disease” and assured the public that retail meat remains safe. While the pit has been filled, environmental activists warned that the improper disposal method had likely been occurring for months, attracting scavengers and posing infection risks.
