Plastic recycling initiative in Okayama Prefecture
Overview
Students from Kurashiki University of Science and Arts, operating under the team name ‘Plagei’, have initiated a plastic recycling project in Okayama Prefecture using the open-source ‘Precious Plastic’ framework.
Following an initial announcement regarding a planned workshop at the Setouchi City Public Library, the initiative progressed through machine testing and community engagement. On September 18, the team tested a custom-built injection molding machine developed with a local metal processing company. This testing included creating a pine-motif comb designed by students from the Karatsu Minami High School Nijinomatsubara Project Team.
On September 19, a workshop was held at the Setouchi City Library involving approximately 30 participants, including local officials, elderly residents, and students. Participants used recycled plastic bottle caps to create beads for custom bracelets. The project, which included collaboration with NPO Karatsu Farm & Food, aims to promote a circular economy by transforming waste plastic into new products such as combs and coasters.
