Overview
A political dispute has emerged within the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) regarding the party’s gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 elections in Plateau State.
In mid-September, the Middle Belt Young Political Stakeholders (MBYPS) called for intervention from NDC national leader Senator Henry Seriake Dickson. The group alleged that certain actors were attempting to displace the party’s existing candidate, Jonathan Akuns, through an unwarranted substitution or rerun primary election.
By early October, the dispute moved to the judiciary. A Federal High Court in Jos issued a restraining order against Akuns, preventing him from presenting himself as the NDC candidate. The order followed an application by Alfred Dapal, a governorship aspirant who claims he was the candidate produced during a nomination exercise on September 15. The court has restrained both the NDC and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from replacing Dapal or recognizing Akuns as the candidate pending a final legal determination.
