Player criticisms of Roberto De Zerbi's management

Former players of Olympique de Marseille have come forward to criticize the management style of Italian coach Roberto De Zerbi.

Amir Murillo, a former defender for the club, claimed that De Zerbi showed him a lack of respect, leading to a personal conflict that effectively forced his departure from the team. Murillo noted that the tension resulted in him being relegated to the reserve team before his move to Besiktas.

Following these claims, forward Neal Maupay also criticized De Zerbi, describing his coaching methods as “brutal and disrespectful.” Maupay alleged he was treated like a “pariah,” claiming he was forced to train separately and had his belongings kept in a container at the back of the training center rather than in standard locker room facilities. Maupay characterized the experience as a “psychological ordeal.”

In recent comments, Maupay further addressed De Zerbi’s previous characterization of him as a “son,” stating, “I don’t treat my children like that.” Despite these past grievances and the period of isolation he experienced, Maupay expressed a commitment to moving forward and maintaining confidence following recent performances.
