POCSO and PITA legal proceedings in India

Overview

A Hyderabad court has convicted 33 individuals for violations of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) and the Protection of Immoral Traffic Act (PITA). The case stemmed from a 2015 report involving a victim who was promised employment but was instead forced into prostitution and subjected to physical and sexual abuse.

Following an investigation by the Telangana CID, which included raids that rescued nine minor girls, the court issued various sentences. Five of the accused received life imprisonment, while others received sentences ranging from three to 14 years of rigorous imprisonment. Additionally, the court ordered five lakh rupees in compensation for each of the nine minor victims to address their physical and mental trauma.
