Poland agricultural import safety inspections

Overview

An audit by Poland’s Supreme Audit Office (NIK) identified irregularities in the supervision of non-EU fruit imports between 2022 and June 2025. The report noted discrepancies in laboratory testing procedures and costs, revealing that the state occasionally covered inspection expenses that should have been borne by importers. During this period, 48 batches of fruit, primarily frozen raspberries, blackberries, and strawberries, were banned from the market due to issues including mold, contamination, and plastic fragments. Additionally, tea from Sri Lanka was blocked due to irregularities.

Subsequent enforcement actions have specifically targeted agricultural shipments from Ukraine. Authorities intercepted frozen raspberries containing residues of carbendazim and thiophanate-methyl, both fungicides banned in the European Union. Other intercepted Ukrainian goods included fresh apples with pesticide residues and flax seeds containing live pests. In these instances, the Chief Inspectorate of Agricultural and Food Quality prevented the products from entering the market by returning them to the sender or issuing trade bans.
