In late July 2026, the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure announced two parallel road-infrastructure initiatives. A contract was signed to add extra lanes to the A2 motorway between Warsaw and Łódź, with construction to begin under traffic in October 2026. The project involves night-time work, reduced speed limits of 70 km/h, and temporary detours. While the Warsaw-Lowicz section is slated for completion by the end of 2027, the Łódź stretch is expected by early 2028. Potential delays may arise from court protests regarding subcontractor selection. As of August 2026, Strabag has secured a second contract for a 21.8 km segment from the Łowicz junction to the provincial border, valued at approximately 321 million PLN. This segment aims to add a third and, in some areas, a fourth lane in each direction, with completion expected by the first quarter of 2028. During construction, temporary traffic arrangements will maintain two lanes in each direction, supplemented by section-based speed cameras. This is part of a larger four-stage expansion covering roughly 89 km; a third contract is expected in early September, while a fourth segment awaits a court ruling. Simultaneously, the concession for the A4 Katowice-Krakow segment is set to end at midnight on 15-16 March 2027, when the state road authority (GDDKiA) will assume management from Stalexport Autostrada. This follows a 30-year agreement signed in 1997. Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak confirmed the agreement will not be extended. This transition will make the 61-kilometer route free for passenger cars and motorcycles under 3.5 tons, eliminating the current cost of 36 PLN for a one-way trip. Vehicles exceeding this weight limit will remain subject to the state toll system. In September 2026, the Ministry confirmed there are no plans to reintroduce tolls for light vehicles on state-managed sections.
