The expansion of the A2 motorway between Warsaw and Łódź has reached a formal milestone. In late October 2026, the General Directorate for National Roads and Motorways (GDDKiA) signed the final contract for the project, awarding a 28-kilometer section between the Łódź Północ and Łowicz junctions to Budimex for over 453 million PLN. With Strabag handling the remaining three sections, the total project cost is estimated at nearly 1.3 billion PLN. Construction on the main carriageways is scheduled to begin in November 2026, with traffic disruptions expected to continue through 2028. Parallel to these infrastructure works, the Polish Ministry of Infrastructure is examining the feasibility of terminating the concession agreement for the A2 section between Nowy Tomyśl and Konin. This review follows significant toll increases implemented by the concessionaire, Autostrada Wielkopolska. Ministry data shows that between September 2015 and September 2026, toll rates for passenger cars on this stretch are projected to rise from 17 PLN to 41 PLN, an increase of approximately 141% to 145%. The ministry noted these hikes significantly outpace cumulative inflation, which remained below 70% during the same period. While the current contract is set to run until March 2037, GDDKiA has been tasked with analyzing an early termination, despite warnings termination.
