Poland is expanding its national security preparations through military recruitment, administrative reforms, and broad societal defense initiatives. The Ministry of National Defence has drafted regulations for a 2027 military qualification process involving approximately 245,000 individuals. This program targets men reaching adulthood, those without established service categories, and women in critical fields such as medicine, psychology, and IT. To support this, medical commissions are proposed to operate between February and May 2027 to update records and assess fitness rather than reinstating mandatory conscription. Specific details regarding the upcoming qualification process indicate it will primarily target men born in 2008, as well as men from the 2003–2007 age groups who have not yet received a fitness category for active service, including those deemed temporarily unfit in 2025 and 2026. The process also includes women born between 2000 and 2008 with specialized skills, such as psychologists, radiologists, IT specialists, and medical or veterinary graduates. The qualification process is scheduled to begin on January 15, 2027, with medical and military commissions operating from February 1 through April 30 to update records and assess fitness. Regarding service classifications, the military utilizes categories A, B, D, and E. Notably, while category D indicates an individual is unfit for service during peacetime, it does not grant a total exemption from national defense duties; such individuals may still be called to active service during wartime if they possess relevant professional qualifications. To optimize human resource utilization, the General Staff is piloting the mandatory Military Competence Questionnaire (WKK) to identify specific professional talents, such as pilots or dentists. Full implementation of the WKK is expected after 2027. These reforms align with a significant increase in defense spending; in 2026, Poland’s total defense effort is projected to reach approximately 200.1 billion PLN, or 4.81% of the forecasted GDP. To support the goal of building a 300,000-strong army, the Polish Armed Forces have implemented salary increases. As of 2026, base pay for a private is approximately 6,500 PLN, while a general’s base salary can reach up to 22,610 PLN. Despite these efforts, recent public sentiment shows complexity; an IBRiS survey found that while nearly one-third of Poles expressed a willingness to take up arms, approximately 60 percent explicitly refused to go to the front lines.
