On September 9, 2026, a PKP Intercity ‘Koziołek’ passenger train traveling from Lublin to Szczecin collided with a cement mixer truck at a level crossing in Sokolniki Suche, Mazovia. The impact caused the locomotive and six carriages to derail, resulting in the death of a 39-year-old female passenger and approximately 20 injuries. The truck driver reportedly told authorities he was “blinded by the sun” when entering the crossing. In response to the tragedy and recent collisions in other regions, Prime Minister Donald Tusk called for an urgent review of regulations for drivers who ignore railway signals. On September 11, the National Council of the Railway Drivers' Trade Union (ZZMK) conducted a nationwide protest, instructing drivers to reduce speeds to 20 km/h at all level crossings. This action caused massive disruptions; PKP PLK reported that over 1,100 trains experienced delays, totaling tens of thousands of minutes. Following these events, law enforcement has increased scrutiny of crossing safety. During a one-day safety operation titled ‘Bezpieczny przejazd’ in the Podlaskie Voivodeship, nearly 200 police officers identified approximately 400 traffic violations. Notably, 300 drivers failed to come to a complete stop at STOP signs before railway crossings. Authorities emphasized that many drivers merely slowed down rather than stopping, which is critical due to limited visibility caused by embankments or vegetation. To maintain pressure, police have launched unannounced, cyclical nationwide checks, utilizing drones and cameras to monitor driver behavior. Officers are targeting failures to stop at signs and entering crossings while barriers are lowered. Violations involving lowered barriers can result in fines of up to 2,000 PLN, or 4,000 PLN for repeat offenders, alongside 15 penalty points.
