Poland‑Ukraine ties in Russia war

Overview

In early July, Russia warned Poland that its military aid to Ukraine could have “consequences,” framing Warsaw’s support as a new Western threat. Later that month, Ukraine’s foreign minister met Polish and Slovak counterparts to denounce Russia’s intensified attacks on civilian shipping in the Black Sea, highlight the resulting risks to global food security, and coordinate a response. The talks underscored the EU’s latest sanctions package on Russia and Ukraine’s progress toward EU membership, reaffirming Poland’s steadfast backing of Kyiv.

In late July, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha held telephone talks with Polish Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and Slovak Foreign Minister Juraj Blanár, again condemning the Black Sea attacks, thanking Poland and Slovakia for supporting the EU’s 21st sanctions package and for opening negotiation clusters 1 and 6 in Ukraine’s accession process. Kyiv’s new prime minister Serhij Korecki expressed gratitude to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk for cooperation on infrastructure, energy projects and Ukraine’s EU path.

On 23 July 2026, the coordination deepened when Prime Minister Korecki called Prime Minister Tusk, echoing thanks for Poland’s backing of the sanctions package and discussing expanded economic cooperation on infrastructure and energy. Korecki invited Tusk to visit Kyiv, and both leaders reaffirmed continued Polish assistance for Ukraine’s full EU membership.
