Police officer deaths and memorials in Turkey

In late July 2026, senior Konya police officer Şevket Atabay suffered a heart attack, was hospitalized for two weeks, and died on 30 July. A funeral service was held in the Söğütözü neighbourhood of Kadınhanı district, attended by colleagues, family, local residents and the Konya Police Directorate chief.

Two days later, on 1 August 2026, a memorial ceremony marked the second anniversary of the death of Ahmet Şahan, a Kastamonu provincial police officer killed by gunfire in 2024. The event took place at his grave in Abdi village, Nevşehir Province, and was attended by police officials, his family and local citizens. Speakers highlighted Şahan’s dedication to combating drug trafficking and reaffirmed the police force’s ongoing commitment to the cause.
