Polish coal market demand and pricing trends

Overview

Polska Grupa Górnicza (PGG), the largest coal producer in Poland and the European Union, opened online sales for the 2026/2027 heating season in late July. The company reported high demand, noting that thousands of customers were waiting for September delivery slots and that previous promotional campaigns had seen over 200,000 customers purchase more than half a million tonnes of coal.

By mid-August, coal prices for individual customers in Poland began to rise ahead of the heating season. Following a price increase by Południowy Koncern Węglowy earlier in the month, the PGG store raised rates for several coal varieties. For example, bagged blue coal rose from 1400 PLN in February to 1560 PLN, while loose coal increased to 1500 PLN from 1450 PLN. Other types, including nut and cube coal, saw increases of approximately 50 PLN per unit.

As of mid-August, heating costs continue to climb. Certain coal types are now priced at over 1,560 PLN per bag. Additionally, pellet prices have risen by approximately 50% compared to the previous year, a trend driven by limited raw material availability and reduced imports from Belarus and Ukraine. In response to these rising energy costs, the use of cherry pits is being explored as a biomass fuel alternative, provided they are compatible with specific boilers.
