The National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) has launched several initiatives to support environmental and energy goals in Poland. In late August 2026, the fund introduced the ‘Space for Nature. Part 5) Green Municipalities – focusing on biodiversity’ program. With a 40 million PLN budget, this initiative supports municipalities that have expanded nature reserves or national parks since 2024 by covering up to 95% of costs for tourism infrastructure, ecological education, and biodiversity protection. Municipalities may also access preferential loans for water and sewage economy projects with potential loan forgiveness. Concurrently, NFOŚiGW announced a 400 million PLN program funded by the Modernization Fund to support high-efficiency cogeneration from biogas. The first call for applications is scheduled to run from August 31 to November 30, 2026. This initiative provides grants covering up to 40 percent of eligible costs and loans covering up to 100 percent for entrepreneurs building, expanding, or modernizing biomass fermentation installations with a minimum power of 1 MW. The program aims to strengthen energy security, produce at least 40 million m³ of biogas annually, and facilitate the recycling of at least 320,000 Mg of waste per year. In line with these national biogas objectives, the Centralna sewage treatment plant in Bytom is undergoing a major modernization project supported by European Union funds. The investment includes constructing a new fermentation chamber, expanding a sludge processing node, and installing a 400 kW cogeneration unit, a heat buffer, and a photovoltaic farm with energy storage. Additionally, a 1 billion PLN ‘Home Energy Storage’ program is scheduled for September 2026. This program will offer prosumers up to 19,000 PLN in subsidies for home energy storage, heat storage, and selected hybrid inverters. ~~To qualify, energy management systems must comply with European cybersecurity standards, including the NIS2 directive and the Cyber Resilience Act.~~
