The Polish mushroom foraging season has transitioned into a “soft autumn mushroom season,” characterized by steady yields rather than extreme peaks. While porcini are becoming rarer, large bay boletes, honey fungus, and russula are increasingly prominent. High concentrations are currently reported in the south and west, including areas around Opole, Katowice, Zielona Góra, Piła, and Chojnice, with significant harvests also noted in Mielec and Muchówka. Environmental factors have influenced the season. In late August, heavy rainfall raised concerns that torrential downpours could damage shallow mycelium and cause soil erosion, potentially hindering the growth of species like porcini. Additionally, the expansion of the invasive American bolete (slender king bolete) has been noted across Mazovia, Silesia, and the Świętokrzyskie Mountains, prompting calls from naturalists to document sightings to monitor its impact on native species. Safety and legal compliance remain central to the season. Authorities continue to warn that insect larvae do not guarantee edibility, as they can inhabit poisonous species like the death cap. Foragers are advised to avoid specimens near industrial sites or roads due to heavy metal risks. Identification guidance focuses on distinguishing species like parasol mushrooms (kania) and saffron milk caps (rydze) from toxic look-alikes. Recent observations include the spotted agaric (Parkogrzybek plamkostopy) near deciduous trees and honey mushrooms (Opieńki), which require thorough preparation to neutralize certain compounds.
