Polish judicial and political legal disputes

Legal disputes involving the Polish judiciary and political entities have centered on court rulings regarding party funding and prosecutorial authority.

In August 2026, the Supreme Administrative Court dismissed a cassation by the Law and Justice (PiS) party. This decision upheld a previous ruling that denied the party a third tranche of its 2024 state subvention, following the State Electoral Commission’s rejection of the party’s financial report. Prime Minister Donald Tusk characterized the outcome as a “crushing blow” for PiS.

By September 2026, the Supreme Court of Poland issued a ruling challenging the authority of the National Prosecutor’s office. The court dismissed disciplinary proceedings against prosecutor Jakub Romelczyk, finding that the appointment of the disciplinary spokesperson was ineffective due to a dispute over who holds the legitimate authority of National Prosecutor. This ruling has raised questions regarding the legal validity of other disciplinary actions initiated by the Ministry of Justice and led to the postponement of proceedings against Deputy Prosecutor General Michał Ostrowski.
