Polish local government S46 expressway advocacy

Overview

Local governments in Poland’s Opole, Silesian, and Świętokrzyskie voivodeships are actively lobbying for the construction of the S46 expressway, also known as the ‘Szlak Staropolski’ (Old Polish Trail). Initially, approximately 18 municipalities and institutions, including Częstochowa, Opole, and Kielce, issued resolutions and appeals to include the route in the Government Program for the Construction of National Roads.

As the movement intensified, more than 20 municipalities joined the effort, arguing the corridor is essential for economic growth and national defense. The debate has evolved to include two competing route proposals: one following the existing DK46 through Lubliniec and Jędrzejów, and a northern alternative that would connect to the S3 and A1 motorway.

Despite this local pressure, the Ministry of Infrastructure has stated it does not currently plan to include the S46 in government programs, citing insufficient traffic volume on existing sections. However, the Ministry noted that the 2025 General Traffic Measurement may influence future investment priorities.
