Polish PiS internal split
Entities: Mateusz Morawiecki · Adam Bielan · Tobiasz Bocheński · Krzysztof Sobolewski · Jarosław Kaczyński
Overview
In late July, former prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki told TV Republika he had never advised Donald Tusk, blaming a faction of “intriguers” for deepening divisions within Law and Justice (PiS). PiS deputy leader Jacek Sasin rejected the claim and criticized Morawiecki for portraying the party as a personal project.
Four days later Morawiecki stepped down as chair of the European Conservatives and Reformists (EKR) group, refusing to pledge loyalty to PiS and taking about 40 allies with him. The party began searching for a new EKR chairman, with longtime adviser Adam Bielan, rising “professor” faction figure Tobiasz Bocheński, and Patryk Jaki mentioned as candidates.
On 7 August, former PiS secretary‑general Krzysztof Sobolewski announced his departure from the party, sparking speculation that he might join the Rozwój Plus club. His wife Sylwia Sobolewska’s appearances at party events drew mixed reactions. Amid the turmoil, party leader Jarosław Kaczyński is reported to favor Adam Bielan for the EKR leadership, citing his European experience and ability to unite members. The internal split and leadership reshuffle remain a central challenge for PiS ahead of upcoming elections.
