The EU‑wide crackdown on illegal tobacco is intensifying through large-scale seizures and legislative shifts. In Poland, authorities have dismantled multiple illegal production lines, including a major operation in Lower Silesia and another in the Łódź region, seizing millions of cigarettes and tonnes of tobacco. In Germany, customs dismantled a large-scale factory in Rhineland-Palatinate, seizing 80 million cigarettes. French authorities have also conducted raids, seizing illegal e-cigarettes in Saint‑Étienne and counterfeit tobacco on the A29 motorway. Recent enforcement actions highlight evolving smuggling methods and rising volumes. In Bulgaria, customs inspectors at the Lesovo border crossing seized 1.1 million contraband cigarettes hidden inside hollowed-out aluminum insulation panels.
