Political fallout from Kyrenia ship disaster
Overview
Following a maritime disaster off the coast of Kyrenia, Sıla Usar İncirli, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), called for a transparent investigation and legal accountability for those responsible. İncirli characterized the event as a “multi-dimensional crisis” and criticized the lack of speed, scope, and coordination in the psychosocial support network, as well as inadequate official communication during the crisis.
As the situation progressed, İncirli expanded her criticism toward the Ünal Üstel government. She argued that the administration cannot avoid political responsibility through the mere dismissal of a minister. She further accused the government of eroding institutional structures and eliminating meritocracy through corruption and mismanagement, citing the maritime disaster alongside other recent crises—such as a fake prescription investigation, an alcoholic formula scandal, a silo explosion in Kumyalı, and frequent fatal traffic accidents—as evidence of failed governance.
Meeting with relatives of the missing at the Kyrenia Tourism Port, İncirli emphasized that while the nation is in mourning, there is a critical responsibility to seek answers regarding how these incidents occurred and who is responsible. She announced that the CTP is working with experts to develop a comprehensive program to address legal, technical, and oversight deficiencies in ports and maritime activities, which will be shared with the public in the coming days.
