Political scrutiny of Portuguese Interior Minister Luís Neve

The Portuguese Interior Minister, Luís Neves, has faced intense political scrutiny following a public prosecutor’s inquiry into various controversies. In late July, the President of the Portuguese Republic called for a rapid investigation to determine responsibility and preserve the dignity of state institutions.

By late August, Prime Minister Luís Montenegro reaffirmed his full confidence in Neves, describing the minister’s performance as being of ‘extremely high quality and competence.’ Montenegro specifically cited Neves’s management of civil protection during forest fires and his coordination of border control services as evidence of his effectiveness.

During a visit to Lisbon Airport on August 26, Montenegro reiterated this support, stating that government members remain in their positions because he chose them and trusts them. This stance comes amid mounting political tension regarding a potential parliamentary inquiry led by the Chega party. The proposed inquiry seeks to investigate Neves’s previous tenure as head of the Judiciary Police (PJ), specifically regarding his involvement in past investigations. While the PSD has expressed concern regarding potential political damage to the minister, the inquiry is expected to gain momentum in September.
