Political shifts in Istanbul municipal councils

Overview

A series of political realignments has occurred within Istanbul’s municipal leadership. Initially, several prominent leaders, including Kadıköy Mayor Mesut Kösedağı and Maltepe Mayor Esin Köymen, resigned from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) to join the Yeni Parti. Kösedağı’s departure followed internal CHP disciplinary proceedings, and he was joined by 30 of the 36 members of the Kadıköy Municipal Council.

Subsequently, the DEM Party announced that municipal council members originally elected via CHP lists under a ‘City Consensus’ strategy would officially join the DEM Party. This move affects 77 members across five provinces, including Istanbul and Mersin. In the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council, the transition of 18 members is expected to reduce the CHP’s seat count from 93 to 75 while establishing a new DEM Party group.
