Political violence against Brazilian lawmakers

Overview

Brazilian lawmakers have reported a series of severe death threats and acts of political violence involving racist and gender-based abuse.

In August, Federal Deputy Talíria Petrone requested urgent intervention from the Minister of Justice after receiving multiple threats against her and her family. Petrone reported that the messages included racist abuse, sexual violence, and the disclosure of personal information. She criticized the perceived lack of institutional response despite filing 15 reports with the Federal Police.

By September, additional lawmakers reported similar intimidation. Federal Deputy Natália Bonavides received encrypted emails containing descriptions of planned sexual assault and dismemberment, which she attributed to an extremist group. These messages also included the personal data of her family members. Concurrently, Natal city councilor Brisa Bracchi reported receiving death threats and threats of ‘corrective rape’ related to her sexual orientation. Both lawmakers have referred their cases to police and public ministries, stating they intend to continue their political activities.
