In late July 2026, Sanrio announced the 30th-anniversary celebration for its character Pom Pom Purin. An initial rollout was scheduled for August 1 at the Abeille retailer, featuring items such as a plush-backpack, die-cut pouches, and a limited-edition mook with a “fluffy-mochi butt cushion.” The 16-page “Pom Pom Purin 30th Anniversary Nondiri Pom Pom Book,” priced at ¥4,180, is scheduled for release on September 9 and can be pre-ordered via Amazon Japan and Rakuten Books. Promotional events are planned at Kinokuniya bookstores in Shinjuku and Yokohama. On July 29, the merchandise launch expanded nationwide through Shamble (Shimamura Group) stores and online, featuring shoulder bags, face-printed pouches, charms, and a dish set. A collaboration with Shirotan—celebrating Shirotan’s win in the 2026 Sanrio Character Award partner category and Pom Pom Purin’s overall first-place finish—debuted on July 31. This collection includes key-holders, a 55 cm hugging pillow, T-shirts, and stickers, with sales limited to three units per customer via Shirotan’s stores and online portals. Additionally, Sanrio partnered with Osaka’s Ginsou to launch a limited-edition caramel pudding flavored castella. Available from August 1, the five-piece packs are priced at ¥800 (tax-free) and sold through department stores, kiosks, and airport shops. In August, Sanrio announced further anniversary-related items, including a Japan Post online shop collection available for order until August 31. Expansion of the anniversary celebrations includes the August 27 release of the “That Era Pompompurin Design Series,” a 16-item collection of plush toys, bags, and stationery designed to replicate the retro aesthetic of 1996 merchandise. Concurrently, 37 Sanrio shops across Japan will host pop-up stores.
